SPLC's California "Patriot" group list, or: Crying Wolf Makes Everyone a Wolf

SoCal Martial Law Alerts

Lucky for you and me, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a self-proclaimed "non-profit" civil rights organization "fighting hate and bigotry," has decided to keep it's nefarious eye on what it considers to be (gasp) "Patriot" groups. Included in this year's list are a rather benign assortment of organizations that the SPLC considers to be on the "radical right." (Notably absent is a similar treatment of the "radical left.") What's most disturbing, though, is the SPLC's sloppy tendency to lump all of its so-called "Hate" groups together with "Patriots," "tea parties" and anyone even vaguely leaning toward the right side of the false left-right paradigm (see: Rage on the Right).

Talk about demonization by association.

But before we go into specifics, let us study the SPLC's 501(c)3 "non-profit" status for a moment, shall we?

Check out the SPLC's "Assets" and "Income" columns on MelissaData.com:

Just scroll down, it's not hard to find the SPLC's numbers -- they fairly leap off the page at you, they are so large. It seems "non-profits" are quite the profitable business to be in these days, because, as you can see, the SPLC has "Assets" and "Income" into the hundreds of millions of dollars. That's right: Hundreds of millions of dollars.

That's one heck of a lot of 10 and 25 dollar donations ... Oh, but wait a minute. When you click on MelissaData's SPLC link:

http://www.melissadata.com/Lookups/np.asp?ein=630598743

You find a notation indicating that the SPLC is an:

Quote
"Organization which receives a substantial part of its support from a governmental unit or the general public." (emphasis added)

Hmm. Where do you suppose those hundreds of millions of dollars came from? The brokeback "general public," or some flush "governmental unit?"

You decide.

With that in mind, let us return now to the SPLC's dubious need to track all the nation's "Patriot" groups all the time. Here's what the SPLC has to say about them:

Quote
"Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the "New World Order," engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment [sic] doctrines ... The list was compiled from field reports, Patriot publications, the Internet, law enforcement sources and news reports."

Since the SPLC's "Patriot" group list for California includes peaceful groups such as: the John Birch Society, Oath Keepers and We Are Change (Northern California only; sorry SoCal, apparently you're not "radical" enough), one has to wonder what all the fuss and bother is about, especially when the SPLC admits that:

Quote
"Listing here does not imply that the groups themselves advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, or are racist."

Maybe the SPLC hopes to demonize such groups by the mere act of listing them? (Hey, they've got to spend that hundred mil somehow ... And how are they going to keep the funds flowing if they don't grow their lists by leaps and bounds year after year? There must be a constant threat / a continual boogey man, or they lose their reason for being.)

But such a "Grimm" strategy (pun intended) is bound to backfire as more and more innocuous groups find themselves on the SPLC's ever-growing list. Uh oh. It might even one day become a "badge of honor" to "make the list." And maybe it already has, as some -- such as Frank Falcon of We Are Change San Francisco -- so eloquently point out:

Quote
"Congratulations to all the We Are Changers. We Are Change is now on the Southern Poverty Law Center's "list" of Patriot groups, along with the Oath Keepers and a number of other groups of people that (Gasp!) care about America. I'm glad to stand with all of you as a believer in justice and our Constitution."

Oops.

Because when you continually cry demon, SPLC, it won't be long before everyone discerns who the real demon is.
